I-80 Accident Rescue (Winda)

On Monday November 20th, 2023 we were alerted of a pretty serious accident with injuries on I-80 just west of Cheyenne. Their beloved dog, Winda, had escaped and bolted off from the scene. I immediately started giving Jeffery tips about dog behaviors lost from auto accidents & the importance of scent articles being left near the scene. He informed me that family was on their way to assist but it would be a bit before they arrived. I want to note the determination of this family to spread the word. When I contacted Jeffery the family had already contacted all local shelters, animal control, WHP, and the quarry closest to where the accident happened. They were on the ball! I personally was unable to get out to the scene due to obligations to my oldest son, so I reached out to my wonderful partner Brenda who loaded up her trap just in case & sprung into action without any hesitation. We knew it was getting dark soon & out there, time was of the essence. At the time we only knew of one sighting – that she had been seen around 11am near MM 339, running east down the service road. Brenda had a contact at the Quarry (Charlie) & reached out to him. He stated he had seen Winda and she ran from everyone who tried to catch her. We received several more sighting timelines via social media comments while Brenda was out looking around. Unfortunately, Brenda had no luck in spotting her before dark in the area. Machelle (the owner’s daughter) arrived on scene shortly after the sun set & began canvassing. While searching around in vehicles they received the call they needed to get Winda to safety. Quarry personnel heading in had just spotted her. They got over to the location immediately to keep her from getting on the interstate & Winda came directly to Machelle. Relief at last! She was safe & sound!!

As everyone can imagine, her owners were frantic after the accident. Her dad even tried to decline medical attention that he needed, to stay in the area & search. He managed to stay out there for a bit with officers assisting him, but ultimately he had to be taken in and evaluated. This family endured some serious injuries, and we are thankful that Winda is now back with them to help them heal. With permission from the family we are sharing their reunite photos, Winda is their service dog so she gets to be by their side. We wish them all the best & a speedy recovery.
