Diamond – The Abandoned Husky

On May 11th, 2023 Animal Control was notified of two huskies running loose on the southside of Cheyenne and 2 others had been captured by community members. Several people had tried to contain them to no avail. Sadly later that morning the male to this pair would be hit by a car & did not survive. The female would continue to run from everyone. Sightings would stop for a few days, nobody reported seeing her. On May 14th, 2023 we finally had another sighting. A lovely woman named Stephanie contacted Animal Control & stated she was hanging in her yard on & off. She fed her and she slept there overnight but would not let them approach. Animal Control realized she would need to be trapped and contacted us. Anytime she would see their trucks approaching she would bolt off & hide. I reached out to Stephanie & she gave permission to do whatever we needed to. I loaded up everything & headed over. As soon as we arrived there she was, looping around my vehicle a couple of times. Animal Control arrived to help me unload & set up. She seemingly disappeared for a while. Animal Control had to leave for another call & within 15 minutes she came out of hiding. She darted straight over to the trap for food & we had her safe.

Sadly we do know who her owners are along with about 10 other huskies involved in this case.

Animal Control requested the Cheyenne Animal Shelter name her Diamond at my request. It was just such a fitting name for her. If I could take in anymore animals right now, she’d be with us forever. She is such a sweet & goofy soul.

I also want to highlight why traps cannot be left unmonitored & you must remain close by – had she been left in this trap for more than the 1-2 minutes it took me to fly over from across the street, she would have found a way to escape. Watch the video below to see what she does to try to escape.
